The continuous growth in knowledge in neuromuscular medicine have accelerated diagnosis and treatment of patients with muscle diseases. Serological markers have become crucial in characterizing immune-mediated myopathies, complementing muscle pathology. Muscle imaging has acquired a growing role in the diagnostic process, phenotype characterization and clinical outcomes of muscle diseases. Genetic tests, essential for the diagnosis of inherited myopathies, are instrumental for patient care, as many inherited myopathies carry risks of other organ involvement and gene therapy is making enormous progress. Faculty will elucidate the state of the art of antibodies, imaging and genetic studies in the assessment and treatment of muscle diseases. Participants will recognize the clinical, serological, pathological, radiological, and genetic heterogeneity of muscle diseases improving their diagnostic skills; become familiar with the myopathic phenotype and extramuscular manifestations associated with specific myositis antibodies; appropriately utilize myositis-specific antibodies in clinical practice for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes; become familiar with imaging studies that are commonly used in the diagnostic evaluation of muscle diseases; recognize imaging features that characterize acquired and inherited myopathies; become familiar with the spectrum of genetic tests and their limitations in the diagnosis of muscle diseases; and recognize implications of genetic findings in patient care and role of muscle pathology in facilitating interpretation of genetic findings.
