Upon completion:
Participants should be able to identify ethical principles and aspects of the law applicable to health care; describe their application in daily practice; describe the strengths and shortcomings of surrogate decision making; create communication strategies for advance care planning with patients and their surrogates; compare and contrast the elements of informed consent both for research and for therapeutic and diagnostic procedures; and identify features of individual cases that should trigger the involvement of ethics consultants or committees.
