The AAN Emerging Leaders Development program engages talented early-career members who have the disposition to lead and are interested in future roles within the AAN and the field of neurology. This six-month training opportunity offers knowledge and skill development to help advance career goals.

The AAN's Emerging Leaders Program is an all-expenses-paid leadership development opportunity of unparalleled caliber. The program incorporates executive leadership development, collaboration with peers, practical implementation of education through a group project with selected leaders, leadership coaching, and mentorship opportunities with leaders in the Academy. This transformative experience teaches one to lead self, others, and the field of neurology.

What to Expect – Program Overview

The program will kick off October 23-25, 2024, and participants will graduate in April 2025.

  • Coaching: Monthly one-to-one coaching sessions with a consultant.
  • Mentoring: One-to-one mentorship with a seasoned member of the AAN that includes regular touchpoints.
  • Group Calls: Regular virtual calls to collaborate on tasks, share experiences, learn, and network.
  • Face-to-Face Meeting: In-person participation at the program kickoff, and attendance and graduation at the 2025 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. (April 3-7).
  • Advisor Support: Specialized project support from Emerging Leaders Program class graduates.
  • Group Project: Collaboration on an AAN-assigned group project to challenge, engage, and support each other's learning and development.
  • Engagement with AAN: Learn about the governance, committees, mission/vision, and engage with leadership.
  • Alumni Community: Engage with others in our exclusive leadership alumni community.

How to Apply – Eligibility and Application Requirements

Eligibility

Eligible applicant must be a certified neurologist and active AAN member residing in the United States*

  • Applicant must also be less than seven years out of residency

The AAN Leadership Development Programs intentionally aim to choose a broad range of applicants that reflect the diversity of both the population and the communities we engage with.  We strongly encourage applicants from various backgrounds to apply, embracing diversity in factors such as race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and individuals with disabilities.

Time Commitment

Participation in all in-person and virtual sessions is mandatory. Participants are required to come prepared for and engage in all leadership, mentorship, small group peer, and leadership coaching sessions. Participants must plan to spend between 6-11 hours a month on all elements of the program, including independent reading, research, and group project work. Please do not apply for this program if you are unable to invest this time.

AAN members interested in participating in the program should submit the following documents in PDF format, in addition to your responses to the essay questions, as part of the application process:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Letter of Recommendation

Emerging Leadership Program Grading Rubric

  • Leadership Potential (Weight = 40%)
  • Self-awareness and understanding of leadership (Weight = 30%)
  • Alignment with program and leadership developmental needs (Weight = 30%)

Selection

Prior participants in the AAN's multi-month leadership development programs are not eligible to apply. The diversity and experience of the whole cohort, beyond individual attributes, is considered to provide the best learning experience.
