AAN Committees

The Academic Neurology Committee champions the viability of academic neurology by addressing business and organizational issues of academic neurology departments including leadership, mentorship, financial, EDI, and sharing of best practices. It promotes the rewarding educational, organizational, and business aspects of neurology academic departments with a key focus on engagement with leadership constituents of academic departments including department chairs, academic business administrators, diversity officers, and division chiefs.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The overall charge of this committee will help address all of the specific AAN strategic goals with a particular focus on the engagement of the academic neurology workforce, care delivery at academic health systems, promoting neurological health equity in academic departments, ensure the health of academic neurology departments, provide resources to support the financial well-being, viability, and innovation of the practice of neurology within academic departments; expand and support neuroscience research, and create novel ways to educate and assist key academic leaders to provide high value, team-based, patient-centered, clinical care within academic departments.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains a compelling strategic plan for all AAN Academic Neurology initiatives in alignment with the overall AAN strategic plan
  • Evaluate and assess needs of all academic constituents - across the department, all levels, and all roles
  • Coordinates, reviews, and advises on programs, resources, and policies in relation to Academic Neurology
  • Steer the vision for its subcommittees’ work and ensure a comprehensive approach to financial well-being, viability, and innovation of the organization, practice, and development of neurology within academic departments, EDI, and gender equity.
  • Work closely with the Subcommittee on the development and implementation of the AAN Annual Chair Summit.
  • Offer educational and networking opportunities and resources on an ongoing basis (e.g., webinars, Synapse, publishing guidance documents, offerings at the Annual Meeting).
  • Collaborate with the Education Committee, Science Committee, Medical Economics and Practice Committee, and Membership Engagement Committee, as well as other AAN committees, to align in executing the board’s strategic plan.
  • Foster beneficial relationships and collaborations with external groups when appropriate.

Selection/Appointment

The Chair and members of the Committee are appointed by the AAN President.

Meeting Schedule

The Committee will meet virtually once quarterly.

Estimated Time Commitment

Approximately 3-5 hours per month (including email correspondence), plus meetings (the meetings will be virtual)

Committee Composition

The committee composition may include the following members:

  • Chair of the Neurology Department Chair Subcommittee
  • Chair of the Division Chief Subcommittee
  • Chair of the Diversity Officer Subcommittee
  • Chair of the Advancing Women in Academics Subcommittee
  • Chair of the Academic Neurology Business Administrator Work Group
  • Academic Advanced Practice Provider
  • Child Neurology Department Chair or Division Chief
  • 6-8 neurologists representing Academic Department roles and/or AAN Committee/Subcommittees (education, research, and practice)
