Bladder, Bowel, and Sexual Dysfunction Screening and Follow-Up for Patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Measure purpose: Ensure patients are routinely screened for at least one of three symptoms: bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction, and if screening positive appropriate follow-up care occurs.  

The numerator: Patients screened for at least one of three symptoms: bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction in the past 12 months, and if screening positive, patients had appropriate follow-up care.

is divided by

the denominator: patients with a diagnosis of MS

Exclusions are removed from the denominator for: 

  • Patient refuses or declines on date of encounter

Measure Calculation Example

Dr. Musa saw 100 patients between January 1 and December 31 with a diagnosis of MS. This is the denominator.

Dr. Musa documented four patients declined screening on the date of the encounter meeting exclusion requirements.

Of the 96 remaining patients, Dr. Musa documented screening for bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction and no need for follow-up for 28 patients. She documented positive screenings and follow-up for 14 patients. The inumerator is 42 (28+14).

Quality of patient care = (28+14)/(100-4). Dr. Musa has a score of 43.75% for this measure.
