Job Description

The Medical Economics and Practice Committee (MEP) champions the viability of the practice of neurology by improving the economic and practice environment for members through education and advocacy. It promotes the rewarding clinical and business practice of neurology.

Committee Responsibilities 

  • Steer the vision for its subcommittees’ work and ensure a comprehensive approach to reimbursement, practice management, care delivery, and the value of neurology.
  • Collaborate with the Quality and Advocacy Committees, as well as other AAN committees, to align in executing the board’s strategic plan.
  • Review regulatory issues and provide subject matter expertise for AAN comment letters to regulatory agencies with assistance from the Policy Subcommittee of the Advocacy Committee.
  • Provide instruction to AAN members on emerging physician payment structures, practice management, office technology, regulatory issues, and correct coding for neurology via in-person and online education.

Member Responsibilities 

  • Attend two in-person meetings per year; participate in three to five other virtual meetings per year.
  • Participate in MEP email listserv discussions, provide feedback on timely issues, and check and respond to emails at least once per week.
  • Serve as liaison to other medical specialty societies and organizations. This may include, but is not limited to, overseeing aspects of the collaboration, attending meetings of the collaborating group, and guiding projects through the AAN approval process.
  • Copy AAN staff on all committee-related correspondence.
  • Submit status reports to AAN staff prior to the agenda deadline for each MEP meeting.

Selection/Appointment

Appointments are made by the AAN President Elect.

Meeting Schedule

The MEP meets in person two times per year. Other meetings will be held via videoconference.

Estimated Time Commitment

Six hours per month, including two in-person meetings, virtual meetings as needed, and email listserv communications.
