Measure purpose: Monitor fatigue outcomes for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS)

The numerator: Patients with MS whose most recent screen indicates results are maintained or improved on a validated fatigue rating instrument for patients with MS in the past 12 months

is divided by

the denominator: All patients with a diagnosis of MS.

Exclusions are removed from the denominator:

  • Patient has a comorbid medical condition causing fatigue

Key Phrases

Examples of key phrases you could use to meet the measure include:

  • Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (followed by numerical score)
  • Fatigue Severity Scale (followed by numerical score)
  • MS Specific Fatigue Severity Scale (followed by numerical score)
  • Unidimensional Fatigue Impact Scale (followed by numerical score)

Measure Calculation Example

Dr. Hernandez sees 100 patients diagnosed with MS between January 1 and December 31. This is the denominator.

Sixteen patients have comorbid conditions that may cause fatigue (i.e., sleep apnea, renal failure, pulmonary conditions) documented. Two patients declined to complete fatigue questionnaires. These 18 (16+2) patients are removed from the denominator as exclusions.

Of the remaining 82 patients, 33 patients had maintained or improved scores on validated fatigue rating instruments in the measurement period. This is the numerator.

Quality of patient care = 33/82 (100-18). Dr. Hernandez has a score of 40.2% for this measure.
