Develops recommendations for policies and activities related to all issues of a scientific nature that involve the Academy and its membership. Responsible for the creation of the scientific component of the AAN Annual Meeting, including the selection of the winners of science-related awards.

Job Description

The Science Committee develops recommendations for policies and activities related to all science and research matters that involve the Academy and its membership. The Science Committee is responsible for: 1) the creation of the scientific component of the AAN Annual Meeting and Regional Conference programs; 2) the AAN Research Program and Clinical Research activities at the Academy; and 3) oversight of AAN Scientific Awards, which includes a review of current and new award guidelines and process and the selection and recognition of winners of science-related awards. The Science Committee also serves as the liaison with NINDS and NIA and collaborates within the Academy on research advocacy and public engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Attend two meetings each year:
    • January (~2-day in-person meeting): to review and finalize the Annual Meeting scientific program. Review and take action on the AAN Research Program and Clinical Research activities.
    • June (~2-day in-person meeting): to review evaluation data from the immediate past Annual meeting, conduct strategic planning for the upcoming year of the AAN Science, and to set the scientific program for the upcoming Annual Meeting.  Review and take action on the AAN Research Program and Clinical Research activities.
  • Participate in emergent science/research-related activities over the course of the year including workgroups on policy issues, abstract/award selection, collaborations within and outside the AAN, etc (via conference calls).
  • Participate in remote meetings via Zoom as needed.

Estimated Time Commitment

Five hours per month plus meetings.

  • Vice Chair – Science Committee (overlap with the Science Subcommittee Chair is permitted)
  • Chair -  Research Program Subcommittee
  • Chair -  Clinical Research Subcommittee
  • Additional members are assigned at large, based on multiple subspecialty expertise and research type expertise (basic, translational, and clinical)
  • Neurology Resident
  • NINDS Director or Deputy Director, ex officio (named at the discretion of the Science Committee Chair in collaboration with AAN President; term limit is in accordance with the NINDS role)
