Upon earning their medical degrees and entering residency, physicians are called upon to lead.  Despite this, medical education offers physicians little formal leadership training.  Over the past decade, multiple authors have drawn attention to this deficit and called for formal leadership training for physicians
To describe a novel leadership development curriculum for residents in an academic neurology residency program and to report initial outcomes
Departmental faculty with leadership experience designed and implemented the leadership curriculum. The curriculum consisted of monthly interactive didactic sessions on topics associated with sound leadership including: emotional intelligence, teaching medical students, communication skills, leadership styles and giving feedback.  To measure program effectiveness, residents completed evaluations after each session as well as an overall program evaluation, in which they rated their leadership behaviors before and after exposure to the curriculum.  A leadership self-assessment for physicians, developed by the UK National Health Service, was administered to all residents before and after the curriculum was delivered
On the annual program evaluation 31-62% of responding residents (n=16) indicated that their leadership behaviors improved one or more levels after exposure to the curriculum.  In the leadership self-assessment, all 31 items were measured by the scale 1=A lot of the time, 2=Some of the time and 3=Very little/None of the time.  Change scores were determined for items and respondents that matched in both surveys.  Items were grouped by domains for analyses.  Domain-level averages were obtained by averaging mean change scores by domain. The domains “Demonstrating Personal Qualities,” and “Creating the Vision” showed the most improvement, on average, while “Setting Direction” showed the least.

Leadership training can be integrated successfully into neurology residency training programs and can result in increased self-reported leadership behaviors. Creation and delivery of the curriculum also provides opportunities for faculty development.
