Impact of Tardive Dyskinesia on Physical, Psychological, and Social Aspects of Patient Lives: A Survey of Patients and Caregivers in the United States
Movement Disorders
P6 - Poster Session 6 (5:30 PM-6:30 PM)
5-005
TD is an iatrogenic, hyperkinetic movement disorder that has substantial impact on patients’ lives.
To assess the experiences and concerns of patients with tardive dyskinesia (TD) in the United States from the perspectives of patients and caregivers of patients with TD.
A targeted literature review and interviews with patients, caregivers, and clinicians were conducted to develop 2 online English-language surveys (1 each for patients and caregivers of patients with TD) to assess patient burden of TD; surveyed caregivers were providing unpaid care to patients for ≥3 months. Participants provided responses regarding the impact of TD on physical, psychological, and social domains of patient lives rated from 1 (least impact) to 5 (most impact) as well as impact on professional life and treatment of underlying psychiatric conditions (not shown). Impact scores were calculated for each domain and summarized descriptively.
Overall, 269 patients and 162 caregivers were surveyed. Most patients and caregivers (75.1% and 82.7%, respectively) reported that TD has a severe impact on patients (impact score ≥4 on ≥1 item within each domain) across physical, psychological, and social domains. Mean (SD) impact scores, as reported by patients and caregivers, respectively, were 3.1 (0.9) and 3.2 (0.7) for physical, 3.5 (1.0) and 3.5 (0.8) for psychological, and 3.2 (1.1) and 2.9 (0.7) for social domains.
TD imposes a substantial burden on patients’ physical functioning, mental well-being, and social activities. These results reinforce the need for health care providers to assess impact to patients when assessing TD movements.
