Sleep apnea is highly prevalent in patients with neurological disorders and often underdiagnosed in this population. This course will begin with the classification, diagnosis and treatments for sleep disordered breathing. We will delve deeper into the literature showing obstructive sleep apnea as an independent risk factor for stroke and the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment as crucial primary and secondary stroke prevention tools. We will also discuss the nuances of sleep apnea in the aging population, focusing on evidence from basic science and clinical studies supporting a relationship between OSA and dementia.
