2022 Annual Meeting | C118 - Clinical Approach to Muscle Disease: Role of Antibodies, Muscle Imaging, and Genetic Testing

Wednesday 04/06/22
07:00 AM - 09:00 AM PDT Add To Calendar
This program will be presented both in-person and online
This program will be available in the meeting's On Demand product.
Seminar
Margherita Milone, MD, FAAN
Neuromuscular and Clinical Neurophysiology (EMG)
The discovery of new antibodies and genes causative of neuromuscular diseases, combined with easy access to novel testing, have accelerated the diagnosis of muscle diseases and impacted patient care.  Serological markers have become crucial in characterizing immune-mediated myopathies, complementing muscle pathology. Muscle imaging has shown a growing role in the diagnostic process, phenotype characterization and clinical outcomes of muscle diseases. Genetic tests, essential for the diagnosis of inherited myopathies, are instrumental for patient care. Faculty will elucidate the state of the art of antibodies, imaging and genetic studies in the assessment and treatment of muscle diseases. Participants will recognize the clinical, serological, pathological, radiological and genetic heterogeneity of muscle diseases. Participants will become familiar with the myopathic phenotype, extramuscular manifestations and risk of cancer associated with specific myositis antibodies. Participants will appropriately utilize myositis-specific antibodies in clinical practice for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Participants will become familiar with imaging studies that are commonly used in the diagnostic evaluation of muscle diseases. Participants will recognize imaging features that characterize acquired and inherited myopathies. Participants will become familiar with the spectrum of genetic tests and their limitations in the diagnosis of muscle diseases. Participants will recognize implications of genetic findings in patient care. This program compliments Clinical Approach to Muscle Disease: Inflammatory Myopathies and Muscle Pathology but covers independent topics.
