Practice, Policy, and Ethics
In interview format, Kavita Nair, PhD, Vice-Chair of the AAN’s Coding and Payment Policy Subcommittee, sits down with Jose M. Rocha, MHL, business practice manager of a large multidisciplinary neurology practice, to discuss solutions and strategies for easing the burden of prior authorizations (PA) for clinicians and staff. Fred Essis, staff with the Advocacy Committee, will join the interview to discuss federal reform efforts.
Neurologists and their staff nationwide are facing increasing administrative burdens due to prior authorization (PA) requirements. Prior authorization remains an onerous processwhere health care providers are required to obtain advance approval from a patient’s insurer before a specific service, procedure or drug is made available to a patient to qualify for payment coverage. In the next 45 minutes, we will first provide strategies to help minimize the burden of PA for the neurologist and their staff. Through an interview conducted by the Vice Chair of the AAN’s Coding, Payment and Policy Subcommittee with the business practice manager of a large multidisciplinary neurology practice, attendees will learn how to ease the burden of PAs for clinicians and staff alike using three commonly encountered examples medications in a neurology practice:

Obtaining PA for onabotulinumtoxinA used in the treatment of chronic migraine
Obtaining PA for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies for any neurological condition
Obtaining PA for electrodiagnostic testing

Attendees are encouraged to participate with their own questions as well and sample PA templates will also be highlighted. Second, neurologists and their staff need relief from overwhelming regulatory requirements, so they may prioritize caring for patients. A member of the AAN’s Advocacy group will join the interview to discuss federal reform efforts, specifically, the Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act, bipartisan legislation that would improve care for seniors by streamlining and standardizing the way Medicare Advantage (MA) plans use prior authorization and increasing oversight and transparency around prior authorization. A cameo by the one of the bill’s sponsors (Representative Suzan DelBene (WA-01) may be possible).  State specific reform efforts in this area will also be discussed.
