Multiple Sclerosis, Health Care Disparities
Participants will review the current data on the incidence and prevalence of MS in diverse populations and unique geographic distributions; understand the biological principles that underlie the emergent views of pathology and progression of multiple sclerosis among African American, Asian, Hispanic populations, which are the faster-growing demographics in the US; understand current challenges of health care disparities affecting diverse populations; review the emerging data of MS throughout the lifespan affecting minorities, i.e., pediatric-onset MS, aging in MS; understand mimickers, typical and atypical clinical presentations of MS in diverse populations; understand emerging clinical trial data for RCTs in diverse populations; understand how MS affects various communities differently and how its diagnosis and treatment present challenges specific to population groups; evaluate data from the patient experience and registries; review considerations to practicing neurologists of strategies to overcome cultural factors and perceptions from patients and families about MS care to avoid delayed diagnosis or inadequate treatment; and review practical strategies to foster patient-centered care in diverse populations, building trust, patient education, self-agency with opportunities and resources from the AAN to improve care in these populations.
