Learning Objectives Since the introduction of Medicare and Medicaid in the 1960's, reimbursement for clinical services has become increasingly complex. When the government began funding outpatient and inpatient services, it became apparent that there would need to be some "accountability" in an effort to keep the system solvent. Simultaneously, the field of "evidence-based medicine" came into existence and with it, the desire and methodology to measure the quality of services delivered. In this session, we will explore the intersection of these two important trends as well as the implications for careprover autonomy.
Objectives:
As a result of this presentation, learners will understand:
1. The evolution of government funded reimbursement for healthcare in the USA
2. The development of quality measures & intersection with reimbursement
3. The opportunity for care providers to optimize outcomes and get paid to do it
Participants will learn how CMS has incorporated quality measures into reimbursement for clinical services, how quality methodology was developed and is currently used to improve outcomes, and increase their understanding and apply the reality that clinician reimbursement is partially based in quality reporting.
