Participants will gain insight into an approach to difficult conversations with faculty, staff, and institutional leaders. Discussion points will include strategies to engage stakeholders in a manner conducive to constructive rather than emotive dialogue, while still acknowledging the inherent importance of personal perspectives. Methods to pre-plan for difficult discussions will be reviewed, with emphasis on the importance of clarity on purpose, priorities, ethical standards, and fairness. Post-discussions will be reviewed, including the importance of obtaining honest feedback from attendees in such meetings. Finally, discussion will include real-world examples to serve as starting points to highlight each aspect of the above approach.
