General Neurology
Neurology is transforming. Our field has not historically been conceived of - either from without or within - as having a strong commitment to addressing inequities in health, even though many of its most common, most burdensome disorders disproportionately affect persons who belong to marginalized and minoritized groups. Additionally, neurology has historically lagged behind other careers in medicine with respect to the diversity reflected among the ranks of its clinician workforce, academic departments, researchers, and professional societies. Yet, recent years have witnessed a marked shift in understanding with respect to the necessity, promise, and difficulty of embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values in neurology. Participants should learn from a discussion and evaluation of the progress that has been made in aligning the actions of our field with these core values and be able to point to areas where the field of neurology must make further progress in order to achieve a culture of inclusive excellence for neurologists and equitable care for the patients they serve.
