Multiple sclerosis diagnosis

Measure purpose: Ensure proper diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS).

The numerator: patients who received a new diagnosis of MS in the past 12 months who fulfilled international criteria (i.e., 2005 or 2010 revised McDonald criteria)

is divided by

the denominator: all patients with a new diagnosis of MS in the past 12 months.

Exclusions are removed from the denominator:

  • Neuromyelitis Optica,
  • Clinically Isolated Syndrome,
  • Radiologically Isolated Syndrome, and
  • Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis.

Measure Calculation Example

Dr. Patel sees 100 patients between January 1 and December 31 that were newly diagnosed with MS. This the denominator. 

Of the 100 patients, 16 had documentation that the diagnosis was made using international criteria. This is the numerator.

Quality of patient care = 16/100. Dr. Patel has a score of 16% for this measure.
